How to get there

Flights:
The main international airport is Bucharest, though increasingly flights are available to Timisoara or Sibiu. Train or car hire provide the best means of getting from the airport to the park.

Railway:
For the west, north, and est entrances: Cârnic, Râuşor, Gura Apei, Stâna de Râu there are three railway stations: Subcetate (fast and slow trains), Ohaba de sub Piatră (only slow trains), Pui (only slow trains).

Travel time from Bucharest to: Subcetate (direct train) – 8 hrs.
Travel time from Timisoara to: Subcetate (through Simeria) – 3-4 hrs.
Travel time from Simeria to: Subcetate – 45 min. ; Ohaba de sub Piatră – 60 min. ; Pui – 75 min.
Travel time from Petroşani to: Pui – 75 min. ; Ohaba de sub Piatra – 90 min. ; Subcetate – 100 min.

For the south park entrances: Buta, Cheile Buţii, Câmpuşel, there are two railway stations: Petroşani (fast and slow trains) and Lupeni (only slow trains from Petroşani, about 30 min. travel).

Travel time to Petroşani:
from Bucharest: 7 hrs.
from Timişoara: 5 hrs.
from Simeria: 2-3 hrs.

Bus:
There are regular mini buses from Petroşani to south park entrances: Buta and Cheile Buţii. Estimated travel time: 1 ¾ hours.
For the north park entrances, in summer there are mini buses from Ohaba de sub Piatră to Cârnic ¾ hours.
There is no regular public transport for Gura Apei and Râuşor park entrances.

Car:
Given the geographical position, Retezat massif can be accessed from two directions (two towns): Haţeg and Petroşani.
To Haţeg you can drive from Deva, towards south on DN 66 (50 km), or coming from Caransebeş, towards east on DN 68 (70 km).
You can reach Petroşani coming from Deva, towards south on DN 66 (100 km), or you can come from Tg. Jiu on the same DN 66, towards north (50 km).
From Haţeg and Petroşani there are multiple ways to enter Retezat massif, on secondary roads:
Haţeg-Râu de Mori-Gura Apei-Poiana Pelegii (66km)
Haţeg-Râu de Mori-Râusor (33km)
Haţeg-Ohaba de sub Piatră-Nucşoara-Cârnic (28km).
Petroşani-Lupeni (20 km)-Câmpu lui Neag-Cheile Butii (40km)-Câmpuşel (60 km)
