Rila National Park

Introduction

Rila National Park is one of Europe’s largest national parks and is in the Balkan Peninsula’s highest mountain range. Virtually sheltered from human impact, Rila has some of the most secluded forest ecosystems. About 95% of these are natural forests averaging 90 years in age. Spectacular mountains, huge old forests, and crystal clear lakes make up Rila National Park and provide a wilderness experience for everyone fortunate enough to visit.

Rila is the source of one of the deepest and longest rivers on the Balkan Peninsula. With over 150 glistening lakes, Rila got its name from the Tracian name Roula, which means ‘plenty of water’.

The wildlife in Rila is extremely rich and the area supports the largest high-mountain populations of hamster and chamois.

A long history of human settlement and a rich cultural heritage makes the park and area surrounding it fascinating to visit. Near the park you can find the world famous Rila Monastery. Listed as a UNESO World Heritage site, it is a beautiful example of Bulgarian Renaissance architecture.

Rila has a well-developed local tourism infrastructure. Trails link an extensive network of chalets and lodges. In addition, an extensive system of camping and rest areas provides for perfect outdoor recreation. In the surrounding villages there are comfortable hotels and guesthouses where you experience true Bulgarian hospitality.

There are also many small mountain communities that surround the park. They are home to people who have shared their lives with the mountains for generations, and now they wish to share it with you. Many local residents are involved in tourism, and conserving Rila’s nature is essential to protecting their livelihoods. Pan Parks is supporting Rila National Park with sustainable tourism development to ensure that you have a truly special visit.
