Taste of wilderness - Food
After a day in the wilderness - you will have worked up a good appetite. One of the advantages of staying with one of our local business partners is that you will be able to sample the best local produce. Once you have eaten fresh food grown around the parks your weekly visit to the hypermarket will never be the same!
Here we introduce you to flavours from some of our parks with an introduction to local food and some traditional recipes:
Retezat National Park – Romania
From Retezat in Romania here is the recipe for Mici - a traditional Romanian sausage that can be tasted throughout the Carpathians. There is nothing better than Mici, mustard and a big chunk of bread - washed down with a beer or two at lunch. You will often smell the mouth watering aroma drifting through the air as you pass through small villages or approach mountain cabana... Click here for the recipe link to Romanian page below!
Central Balkan National Park - Bulgaria
Experience the real taste of the Blueberry jam – an organic product from a traditional local recipe. Blueberries are collected in the region of Park section Klisura. Appreciate the wonderful taste, sweetness and the unique combination of vitamins and other healing substances, hidden in the small berries.
The Troyan Plum brandy (Rakia) is a legend among the local connoisseurs of good drinks. The old Troyan Plum Brandy is made of high- quality local varieties of plums. It is seasoned in small oak casks for over 7 years thus acquiring an excellent mild taste. In the southern park region the Rakia is made from grape pomace, similar to the Italian “Grappa”. Every village claims to have the best Rakia, so you have to find out yourself whether it’s true or not.
Traditional Bulgarian breakfast includes “Banica”, filo pastry stuffed with white cheese and backed in oil. Several seasonal dishes are served around the year among them “Tarator” a fresh yoghurt soup for the hot summer lunch and stuffed peppers in all variations. A Bulgarian dinner will always start with a salad; every restaurant has a good choice of fresh salads on its menu. Be surprised of the taste of “real” tomatoes often freshly picked from local production.
